SVs history
The Home of Free Thought. That was the name of the study circle founded in Halland in 1920 which went on to become the organisation known today as SV. The modern adult education movement had arisen in the late 19th century out of the struggle for universal equality and freedom of thought and expression.
Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan was formally founded in 1967. Adult education made important contributions towards the creation of a modern, more equitable society. Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan arose from a merger between Svenska Landsbygdens Studieförbund (The Rural adult education association) and Liberala Studieförbundet (The liberal adult education association). The former was active primarily in the countryside, the latter mainly in cities and towns.
Together they grew big and strong.
SVs ambition was to create an association offering a programme capable of satisfying the huge demand for educational and cultural activities. And the need for educational and cultural activities remains strong, just as it was at the end of the 19th century, in 1920 and in 1967.
The Home of Free Thought.
I’s a beautiful name. And an important one, too. Soon, 100 years will
have passed since then. Society has changed. And, of course, so has SV.
But our basic values remain firmly in place.
